Thespian Troupe Compete at First Regional Competition

Oregon City High School reactivated its Thespian Troupe #1907 this school year. Thespians is the International Honor Society that recognizes outstanding work in theatre. It is under the umbrella of the Educational Theatre Association, an advocacy group for Theatre Arts Education.

There are two main events each year that pull all of the Thespian Troupes together, the Regional and State Conferences. These gatherings are competitions in which the students are required to create prepared performances that stand on their own choices, showcasing their individual growth and artistry in either acting, singing, or technical events.

Oregon City High School is in the Northeast Region, composed of one third of the state’s Thespian troupes. The top 20% of scores rank as Regional Finalists, and the top 10% of scores advance to the state level weekend conference in April, held in Salem. This conference contains vendors, workships, industry professionals, networking opportunities, school performances, college and theatre representatives, and much more.

For their first time entering the Regionals Conference in 30 years, OCHS had 20 entries across various categories, including Freshman and Senior level novices and experienced performers. Each student (or group) performed several times in rounds and scores were averaged for the final results. Ratings are structured from Superior to Excellent to Good and Fair. 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place ranks are also awarded per round.

OCHS’s troupe earned a combined 8 Superiors, 26 Excellents, and 18 Good ratings. The troupe collectively also earned 3 1st Place round ranks, 5 2nd place round ranks, and 8 3rd place round ranks. Additionally, Ellie Lundgreen and Alissa Damewood scored in the top 10%, making them State Qualifiers and advancing to the the final competition in Salem.

This is an outstanding showing for Troupe 1907, and they are currently raising funds to go to the State Conference in April. Donations are welcome and appreciated to cover hotel, registration fees, and meals for the students. To donate, contact Mr. Berry at

Finally, the Seniors in Drama 3\4 will be directing John Cariani’s Almost, Maine which opens February 27 and runs nightly at 7:30 through March 2. This show is a collection of love stories with twists, and is suitable for ages 13+. General Admission is $8.00.
